Why “Just Believe” Is the Biggest Lie in Christianity Today

The one command Jesus gave first — completely ignored by most churches today

Jesus never said,
“Just believe.”

He said,
“Repent.”

Before baptism.
Before grace.
Before salvation.

Repentance is step one.
And without it, you haven’t even started.

But churches rarely preach this anymore.

Instead, they offer a feel-good gospel —
no surrender, no obedience, no real change.

The One Word That Changes Everything

“Repent, and believe the gospel.”
Mark 1:15
“Repent, and be baptized… for the forgiveness of sins.”
Acts 2:38
“Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
Luke 13:3

Repentance isn’t a prayer.
It’s not a feeling.
It’s not “inviting Jesus into your heart.”

It’s a command.
And it’s not optional.

In the original Greek, the word is metanoia:
A complete change of mind, heart, and direction.

It means a 180-degree turn —
from sin to righteousness.
From rebellion to obedience.
From self-rule to God-rule.

Real repentance means:

  • You admit your way was wrong.

  • You stop resisting God’s law.

  • You choose to obey Him in everything from now on.

That’s not legalism.
That’s loyalty to your King.

The Great Omission

Most churches today have flipped the gospel upside down.

They say:
“Just believe. Obedience is optional.”

But that’s not what Scripture says.

“They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality...”
Jude 1:4

That’s not grace.
That’s rebellion in religious language.

It may sound spiritual.
But it leads nowhere — except death.

Why Repentance Comes First

Because sin is not a minor mistake.

It’s open rebellion against your Creator.

And it cost the life of the Son of God.

He was tortured. Beaten. Crucified.
Not for preaching love.
But to pay the penalty for your sins — and mine.

That’s what your sin cost.

So when you repent,
you’re not doing God a favor.
You’re surrendering to His authority.
You’re admitting you were wrong and He was right.

That’s the only way forward.

Until you repent…
Your belief is hollow.
Grace is wasted.
Salvation is impossible.

Repentance is the first command of the gospel —
because no one enters the Kingdom of God
without surrendering to its King.
